Launch of ‘Practice guidance on the management of
acute and chronic GI problems arising as a result of treatment for cancer’

A free symposium ‘Optimal management of GI symptoms during and after cancer treatments’ is being held on Monday, 21st November 2011 at ‘The Point’, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Manchester M16 OPX.

The symposium is being held to launch ‘Practice guidance on the management of acute and chronic GI problems arising as a result of treatment for cancer’, which was recently approved by the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and the Royal College of Radiology Faculty of Clinical Oncology. It is intended that the guidance will be published Autumn/Winter 2011, at which point it will be available to view online via the AUGIS website.

Macmillan Cancer Support are sponsoring the symposium to launch the guidance, as it is an important contribution to improving outcomes for the many cancer patients who experience consequences of treatment, particularly those with late effects of pelvic radiotherapy.

The symposium is suitable for all professionals working in gastroenterology, oncology and GI surgery. Presentations from a wide range of clinicians will cover optimal clinical management for this group of patients with complex needs, and Professor Rhodes, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology, will be providing the closing address. The National Cancer Survivorship Initiative has identified that specialist services to deal with the more complex and severe problems have been inadequate (see http://www.ncsi.org.uk/consequences-of-cancer-treatment/ ).

Places are free on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register your interest as soon as possible with GIGuidanceEvent@macmillan.org.uk . Deadline for registration is 30 Sept 2011.

'Liver Disease in Primary Care'

13-14th October 2011

Venue: University of Birmingham.

The department of Primary Care Clinical Sciences at the University of Birmingham are running a course entitled ‘Liver disease in primary care’. This is a two day CPD accredited mini conference aimed at GP’s, practice nurses and other health care professionals with an interest in the liver.

I cannot recommend this course highly enough and I would ask you to let others, who are not members, know about it. Liver disease is becoming more and more important in primary care with an increasing realisation that NALFD, obesity, alcoholic liver disease and Hepatitis are creating a tsunami of morbidity and mortality. It follows an excellent programme last year.

I have attached a provisional course programme on the download section under conference brochures.

Programme to include
·         How to interpret liver function tests, when to investigate and when to consider referral

·         Identifying patients with chronic liver disease

·         Community management of alcohol use disorders

·         Developments in non alcoholic fatty liver disease

·         Screening and community management of viral hepatitis

·         Gall bladder disease - who to suspect and who to refer

·         Vaccinations and drugs in patients with liver disease

·         An update on liver transplantation

Also Professor Martin Lombard will present a session on 'The National Liver Plan'.
